Recursive Founder Mode at Vercel

Nine lessons on scaling founder mode, preserving deployment speed, widening ownership with AI, and pairing fast execution with strong taste.

  1. "Founder mode does not scale. That is why you need 'Recursive Founder Mode.' The founder should not try to oversee everything alone. Instead, put more small founders throughout the company and set the stage for them to break through bureaucracy and walls as if they were the CEOs of their own products."

  2. "At Vercel, nobody except the security team has the authority to stop a deployment. As in the line from Dune—the spice must flow—tokens must flow, and products must keep shipping. There is no 'Email it to me and wait while I review it.' You ship, iterate, and achieve Iterative Greatness."

  3. "The moment that makes me fall hardest for an employee is seeing someone inside the company take complete end-to-end ownership of a product. If you confine yourself to a narrow domain and say, 'I am just the person who writes Rust code,' AI will overtake you. AI is forcing developers to expand their scope across the entire business."

  4. "We are not building technology merely to launch it into the void. Landing it in customers' minds matters just as much as launching it. No matter how good the technology is, it means nothing if you cannot tell its story in a way people understand."

  5. "In interviews, we do not just listen to candidates talk; we ask them to make something. We give them a 'work prompt' and have them build a product with AI. You can immediately see their level by how far they take the details and how they identify problems in our platform when they get stuck."

  6. "Do not assume speed and good taste are a trade-off. What is truly tacky is shipping the purple-gradient result a model produced on its first try. Package your company's best know-how and design system as AI skills, raising the floor so the model cannot produce slop."

  7. "These days, even 17-year-olds build products with AI on weekends and generate revenue. Getting a few GitHub stars is merely the baseline now. The real difference comes not from the technology itself, but from business judgment: how you attract customers with it and prove its value."

  8. "Giving every employee a Claude subscription does not make the organization smarter. Only the 5% who are good at prompting pull ahead, and the gap widens. We built a single internal agent called 'V,' which lets anyone—even from an iPhone—enter one place and use all of the company's data and tools."

  9. "We are completely changing how we choose software. An attractive interface is now table stakes; what matters is how seamlessly it communicates with AI agents. Slow SaaS products that cannot handle hundreds of requests per second from agents are already on our replacement list."
