Real-Time Interpretation for Everyone

AI is making real-time interpretation available to everyone, but the deeper value of studying languages was never just linguistic skill. Curiosity, courage, and openness to difference remain powerful lenses for navigating an AI-shaped world.

The age of real-time interpretation for everyone has arrived. My wife and I both graduated from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. I did not realize it while I was there, but looking back, I see that I did more than take extra credits in foreign languages. I cultivated "curiosity about a bigger world," "the courage to throw myself into unfamiliar places," and "an open mind that learns from difference." These qualities were not easy to acquire in Korea at the time, and they became the foundation of my competitive edge. (HUFS signature electives such as Business Negotiation and Global Business Etiquette seemed unimaginable at the time, but they have also served as reliable tools for nearly twenty years.)

For example, when we said we were going to the United States to start a company at a relatively advanced age, many people worried about us, but we were not afraid. We were already surrounded by people who did things like this. Rather than becoming frightened first, we had a vague understanding of the pain and joy involved in expanding the boundaries of our world and learning something new.

It is obvious that AI will replace people in many fields, following software development, translation, and interpretation. That is still okay. Viewed through the lenses of "curiosity about a bigger world," "the courage to throw myself into unfamiliar places," and "an open mind that learns from difference," it will be a fascinating journey.
